The passage can be taken many ways:

  • Jesus commissioning the disciples as leaders where: "commandment" = "commission" = "entrusting" = literally: putting under an oath to an end
  • Jesus establishing a new covenant
  • Jesus warning all Christians about the attitudes of the world they will face (compare to How Should We Then Live by Francis Schaeffer)
  • The Holy Spirit and Persecution
Questions

Question 1

How is Jesus explaining a new model of leadership in John 15:12-17, compared to His day and compared to ours?

Discuss: accountability, team building, respect, vision

Question 2

In John 7:7 the world cannot hate the disciples.
In John 15:18-25 the world will hate the disciples.

How can these both be true?  How are these situations different?

Question 3

How does John 15:24 explain the polarizing force that leads to the "Unforgivable Sin" described in Matthew 12:31-32, Mark 3:28–30, Luke 12:10 ?

Can you think of an example in your life where people became very polarized in the topic of Jesus or Christianity?
