Fun Facts

  1. The second shortest verse that is a complete sentence in the (Greek) bible is:  (v35) Jesus wept (3 words and 16 characters).
The shortest is:  1Thes 5:16 Rejoice always (2 words and 14 characters).
The shortest verse is just a sentence fragment:  Lk 20:30 And the second (2 words and 12 characters).

  2. Jn11:33, 38 "deeply moved" (ἐμβριμώμενος) also means groaned in the spirit, similar to rebuked. However (v33) wept is silent, unlike v31

  3. (v16) Thomas is called "Didymus" which is Greek for twin.  "Thomas" is the Greek version of the Aramaic word for twin.
Questions

A. What does this say about who Jesus is, and what our relationship to Him should be?

Whenever Jesus asks from The Father, he uses the Greek work Ἐρωτάω which is when someone asks something of an equal person. In v22, Martha uses the word αἰτέω which is when an inferior asks of a superior.

Also Martha states the resurrection as a tenet and doctrine.  Jesus does not say I resurrect, I give life.  He says I am the resurrection and the life.

B1. What does this say about bad shepherds and how the Good shepherd is different?

B2. How can we learn to be better shepherds?

Lazarus and his sisters were apparently held in esteem by "many of the Jews".  A chapter later it says the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus.  Today's story comes right after John has Jesus talking about not-good shepherds.

C1. How do you relate to being overly passionate that affects your worldview?

C2. How are we inconsistent with ourselves, and what remains non-contradictory?

(v16) Thomas has the conviction to go and die with Jesus, but later on doubts that He arose. How is that consistent with his character?

D. How is Jesus special and how can we emulate and help Him, considering the thought below?

In the dismal movie Watchmen, one of the superheroes gains essentially omnipotence and omniscience.  This makes him emotionally apathetic and isolated.
Jesus, (even more omnipotent and omniscient) experienced hunger, fatigue, sorrow, joy, and the opposite of apathy and isolation. What does that say about His character and purpose?

Contrast with The Iliad:

The gods ordain

The lot of man to suffer, while themselves

Are free from care.
